A complaint I often hear is that students who graduate from high school are not actually prepared to do anything specific and many do not want to go to college. So, why don’t we look at high school and rethink the last two years. Instead Junior and Senior years remaining a smorgasbord of classes, have it split out into a trade school and a junior college.

I spent my last two years doing AP classes for college credits. Why not make it official and do two actual years of college because Writing 101 and 121 is redundant to AP English. Let’s save students two years of tuition.

For the high schooler who has no interest in higher education, but is good with their hands or creative, train them to be an electrician, stylist, chef, nurse or computer repair technician. Let them get a certificate so they can start off with a living wage.

We would probably have to rethink who is hired to instruct, as classes would be up to industry standards. If graduating seniors are adults that have to work after graduation, it might as well be a job they are well prepared for and well paid for.
