Women & Sports

When I was in High School the most popular extracurricular activity for boys was football, and for girls, cheerleading. Home coming a big deal, there was an assembly during school where the rest of the students were invited to support them.

The reason I am bringing this up is that I was told recently that women’s sports are not as interesting as men’s therefore they have a smaller audience and less pay. Let’s think about this. The bulk of sports is dominated by men, both as audiences and participants.

I don’t really enjoy football either as a watcher or player. The only time girls played at high school was powderpuff and it got canceled due to fighting. I do understand the game of football, from college, it was part of the culture to go to games and cheer the team then say “we won.”

As an adult, I’ve attended several Super Bowl parties. Women’s magazines are filled with recipes to make for snacks for the occasion. Women cheer and feed people.

Honestly, I prefer watching women’s tennis. I feel for the players even though I never played it myself. The sports I participated in were volleyball and running. Those are only televised during the Olympics. I watch and enjoy them once every four years.

In conclusion, boys sports are celebrated and promoted, and mens sports are covered and marketed. The advertising is primarily focused on men. So, it makes sense why many girls and women aren’t interested in sports. The comment that women’s sports aren’t interesting is probably based on the male audience. It’s too bad though, because sports are good for girls too. While some women enjoy watching men play sports, more might enjoy watching women play.

Cheer has become a sport of it’s own.
