Wizard of the Ring

I just watch the 1925 classic Wizard of Oz with my children. I was struck by many scenes in the movie seem to be prototypes for the Lord of the Rings saga.

To begin with, the concept of someone leaving their quaint home to go on a big adventure is similar. Obviously, both stories have a wizard in them and both have a force of evil. The narrative is based on a journey that the main character and their plucky band of friends must complete. Both main characters don’t have any innate skills or abilities, yet carry a special item of power that is desired by the enemy. Both feature a pretty witch/lady elf that help out in a pinch.

Some of the scenes are shot similarly too. The flying crows and the flying monkeys, the gate scene, the scary wilderness, and the waking up surrounded by friendly faces.

Finally, both films end with the message that there is no place like home.

Are these basically the same story?
