I keep seeing posts from folks bemoaning the loss of cursive and complaining about what books the kids these days are or aren’t reading. I guess that Facebook has become a place to vent frustrations about the educations Gen Z and Alpha. So here’s mine: please stop.
Seriously, as a parent of two school children, one going into middle school and one starting elementary, I am already up to my ears in it. I just got an email from the school: this one listing the drop off and pick up schedules for each grade. I have also have many forms, waivers and permission slips to fill out. There are half days and inservice days to chart on calendars along with volunteer hours, immunizations, well-child, dentist, and orthodontist appointments. There are lunch menus and fees, fundraisers, sports uniforms, dance costumes and school supplies to purchase. I have to buy school shoes and sports shoes and rain coats and sweatshirts that will probably all need to be replaced before the new year.
So, dear Boomers, if you have it in your heart to volunteer in the classroom or library or afterschool program everybody would be grateful. If you take the time to handwrite children letters in the ancient script of our people, I am sure they’d be delighted. If you have the energy to wrangle the carpool or run a school supply drive or purchase books or coach a sport, God bless. They may even name the classroom guinea pig after you.

The wheels on the bus never stop.
