In John 14:2 Jesus says, ”In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”
I think the main interpretation of this scripture is that heaven is really big, like a mansion and there’s lots of place for all of the believers to live. But I think another way to think about it. Maybe it’s not like a physical house at all. Could it be God‘s spirit that comes and lives in us and we are all the “rooms” that he lives in? I think it’s a different perspective that we could explore for a while.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
We’re used to thinking of the place of God existence as a physical place, up in the sky, but did not Jesus leave so his Spirit could manifest itself in the believers? The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. The place that Jesus prepares is our hearts—prepared for God to live in?
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16
In that way, Jesus is not gone from us. He is in our hearts, now. The kingdom of Heaven is here now.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
In order to obey God, we have to love each other in the way that we were meant to care for one another. If we think of other in the light of eternity, then I think we would treat each other with more respect and dignity. This isn’t just another person, but a room where God’s spirit may dwell. The kingdom of heaven isn’t just something that’s in the future. It’s something right now that we can be a part of.
