John 14: Rooms for All

Jesus tells his disciples to not let their hearts be troubled, but believe. “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” Thomas asks him where he is going so that they can follow. Jesus tells him that he is the Way to the father.

Philip asks him to show them the Father and Jesus tells them, that anyone who has seen him has seen the father, because the father is in him and he is in the father. He tells them that whomever believes in him will do works greater and whatever they ask, they will receive.

Jesus tells them to keep his commandment, God will send them his Spirit of truth to dwell with them and in them. His new commandment in the last chapter was to love one another. Jesus tells them, He who loves me will be loved by my father and I will manifest myself to him. Judas (not Iscariot) asked him how it was just them and not the world. Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” Jesus is making himself available to everyone who keeps his command. He promises to not leave them as orphans, but he come again.

The language Jesus uses is about family. He talks of the father and them as orphans being brought into a home large enough for all. In our world there is so much breaking up, families being estranged, and fatherless children, but this is the opposite. Jesus is preaching love and inclusion.

Jesus then gifts them with his peace. He says the ruler of the world is coming, but has no claim on him.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
