John 15: Fruitful Life

Jesus tells his followers that he is the true vine. Using another botanical metaphor, he talks about how the vine dresser removes unyielding vines and prunes the producers in order to bear more fruit. Jesus calls himself the vine and the disciples his branches. They need to stay connected to their source of life. As Christ followers, we can expect the removal of things that do not serve the kingdom and a pruning of things that do.

He repeats his commandment to love. He speaks of even laying down his life for others. He warns them that they will be hated and persecuted because they are not of this world. Here, he is comparing the self-serving, pride-driven world system with his new reordering of love-driven service of others.

Jesus says that a helper will come, the Holy Spirit, and that they will be witnesses about their time with Jesus. His disciples will become apostles, new shoots bringing the fruit of the spirit to the world.

Unpruned grapevines grow a lot of leaves and vines, but create very few grapes.
