Jesus starts by warning his disciples that they will be pushed out of the synagogues or killed by people who think they are offering a service to God, but those people don’t know Jesus or the Father. Jesus again promises to send the Spirit of Truth, who will testify about Jesus.
He likens his death and resurrection to a woman’s giving birth, the process is painful, but the joy afterwards is great. He tells the, “Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.”
Jesus then tells them that they will be scattered, this is necessary to spread the gospel further. He promises to give them whatever they ask for. The task is great, but there will be provision.
At the time, the disciples saw Jesus as a savior of their small community, but his plan was greater. “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
