Acts 10: Peter & Cornelius

In this chapter, two men from different backgrounds are given visions by the Holy Spirit. The first one is Cornelius who was an Italian captain in the Roman army. He was well known for his generosity and his goodness. He had a dream that he would go and meet a man named Peter staying in Joppa with Simon the Tanner. He and his men traveled to the place that the Holy Spirit had directed him.

Meanwhile, Peter went up onto the roof of the house while waiting for dinner to be prepared and fell into a trance and had a vision. In his vision, there was a sheet of animals coming down from the sky, and the Lord was telling him to kill and eat. Peter argued saying that they were unclean, common animals and a voice said, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” He had the vision three times and then woke up with the men at the door of the house. At the time, Jews did not let Gentiles eat with them, but Peter accepted them into his home because the Holy Spirit explained the vision as God calling the men clean.

Then Cornelius and his men learned from Peter about Christ and were saved. After that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles, uncircumcised, non-Jews. So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” He then baptized them.

I feel like in our day and time many people show partiality based on language, land of origin, social status, etc. The good news of Christ is for anyone open to it, and the Holy Spirit and baptism. We do not control the Holy Spirit, only acknowledge and participate.

Vision can mean to see what is there, or to see beyond, to see what could be.
