A doctor asked me yesterday if anyone in our family has been diagnosed with mental health issues. The short answer is no, but the long answer goes like this: If you gave me a list of all the different things that one would associate with ADHD, autism, OCD, anxiety, depression, hyperactive or ultra focused, I could probably find a relative to assign to that particular symptom. Does it help if they married their opposite on some sort of spectrum? Does it cancel out or double up? We have a lot of talented, creative, insightful, unique, passionate and gifted family members. They don’t get along all the time and there are some long-standing interpersonal conflicts. There is also a range of how successful they are in the marketplace. I’m not saying it’s always fine. It’s certainly not the same as whatever normal is. If you think of it as a paint pallet, we have the full rainbow.
