Remembering that Paul is speaking to Jewish believers living in Rome, he pleads the case for the inclusion of non-Jews into the family of faith. These new believers have zeal, but are ignorant of the law of God. Christ himself is their goodness.
Paul contrasts Jesus with Moses. Moses acquired the Ten Commandments from God and wrote the book of Leviticus (so many rules) bringing closeness to God by works, but Christ offers redemption by faith. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 This simplicity also brings equality. “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.” Romans 10:11
Paul then asks how people can call on the name of the Lord if they haven’t heard of him? The word “gospel” means good news and Paul about to make us all newsies. In order for outsiders to hear it, people need to preach it. In order to preach it, someone needs to be sent out. In short, to believe means not only to receive, but also leave your safe space and go out and share what you know to others. The Thanksgiving table has been lengthened, but in order for more people to be fed, they have to be invited in.

Here’s your invite!
