Paul is calling out to his fellow believers to live well. First, we are to be living sacrifices. So rather seeing our decision as a one time event, it is a new way of being. Every day Christians are to subvert their will to God’s. This is not a small ask, and requires fresh inspiration to not be made into the shape of the world, desire driven, but the shape of Christ, following God’s will. We are not to overestimate our individual importance, but see ourselves as part of something bigger.
Paul uses the metaphor of a body with each person representing a different part and function within a larger context of the family of God. Each of us has gifts in various portions of prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation and leadership not for our individual glory, but to serve each other with cheerfulness, zeal and generosity. It is import to see that these skills aren’t limited to professional Christians, but for all of the members of the church to participate in “the measure of faith that God has assigned.”
Finally, our motives should be pure, loving, affectionate, zealous, honoring, patient, honest and hospitable. He wants us to bless those persecute us and do not curse them. Rejoice with those that rejoice, and weep with those who weep. We are not supposed to be haughty, but associate with the lowly. The power to accomplish this comes from prayer and supporting each other. God is calling us to be peaceful and not seek vengeance, leave that to God. If our enemy is hungry, feed them. We will overcome evil with good.
