2 Corinthians 3: Proof of Life

In the third chapter of Second Corinthians, Paul asks what letters of recommendation he needs to prove himself. His recommendation is written by their relationship, inscribed on his heart, “not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God.”

Before Paul’s conversion, he was carrying papers that condemned the early believers to jail or even death, but now he is talking about having his heart being written on.

He says their adequacy comes from God of the new covenant, the one based on grace. He says the Law kills, but the Spirit gives life. He is talking about the Ten Commandments carved in stone that condemned people for their sins. He says the glory of God shown through Moses’ face so brightly that it had to be veiled, referring to the story in Exodus 24.  Paul adds, “When one turns to Christ, the veil is lifted.” He means that forgiveness for our sins makes us free, and we can be transformed by the Spirit to be more like Jesus every day.

Look for hope in the dead of winter.
