Genesis 1: 15-23 On a Wing and a Fin

On the fifth day God speaks into existence all the fish in sea and all the birds in the air and calls them good.

It’s so fascinating to me that fish and birds come first and land animals follow. My own perspective would assume land first, and water and air second because that is how I experience the world. The current consensus in science doesn’t dispute the Biblical order, but method. Scientists look at evolution as driven by necessity rather than design. I don’t see a contradiction, as it the best design to adjust . Is creation a single act or an ongoing process? Is there a feedback loop?

The pursuit of science and faith doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. Hearing the creation story makes me want to study science more, and studying science triggers an awe of the natural world and reverence for God.

The language Genesis uses language to describe the creatures is “teeming” and “swarms” describing a vast number and variety of fish and birds. We are still discovering varieties of both.

Unfortunately, as humans, in our selfishness and haste, we have polluted and overfished our waters, and released millions of pounds of chemicals and exhaust into our air. Some of the damage has been reversible. We do not have a silent spring this year, but we certainly need to show more respect and care for the resources we all share. If not for the creatures themselves, then at least out of deference to the God who made them.
