Abraham and his family travel southwest across the Negev, a desert, past the place that Hagar went when she ran away to a place called Gerar. Abraham tells the local King Abimelech that Sarah is his sister and so takes her keeps her in his palace. It’s the same deal as in Egypt.
God visits the king at night and tells him that he is a dead man for taking Sarah. Abimelech says that he is innocent because he has not touched her, and he is upset that Abraham lied to him. When confronted, Abraham justifies himself by saying Sarah is a half-sister and that he was afraid. Technically, is her brother from another mother.
Abimelech returns Sarah and gives Abraham sheep, oxen, servants and a thousand pieces of silver and tells him to move wherever he wants. Abraham prays for the house of Abimelech. God heals them since he had caused the wives and servants of the household to not be able to bear children because of Sarah.
Why is it so easy to forget that God will protect us like he said he would? Abraham cannot have his promised child if he keeps giving his wife away. He got in trouble for it with the Pharaoh, and now he’s doing it again. Why does he let fear run his life? Why do we?
