God tells Abraham to bring his only beloved son to the land of Moriah and give him as a burnt offering to him. So, Abraham takes Isaac, a donkey with wood and two servants on a three-day trip. Upon arrival at the mountain, Abraham leaves the servants and donkey. He has Isaac carry the wood, while Abraham carries the knife and fire. Isaac asked his Dad where the lamb for the offering is. Abraham replies, “God will provide for himself a lamb for the offering.”
When they arrive at the top, Abraham builds an altar and binds his son Isaac and put him on it. He raises his knife, but an angel of God stops him and says, “Now I know you won’t withhold anything from me.”
Abraham looks up and sees a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. He unties his son and sacrifices the ram in his place. He calls the place, “the Lord will provide.”
The angel repeats the promises God gave Abraham to bless and multiply his descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand at the sea shore. In his offspring, the nations shall be blessed. Abraham and his son return to Beersheba, the well of the oath, to live.
This whole section is filled details a that create a template for the crucifixion story of Christ. Jesus carries his own cross like Isaac carries the wood. Isaac is called the only beloved son like Jesus is at his baptism. Jesus is also called the Lamb of God, who like the ram caught in the thorns, takes the place of humanity to atone for our sins.
