Supergirl Movie

On the insistence of my youngest, I took my two daughters to a matinee of the new, live action Supergirl movie. Unfortunately, we were disappointed by this film. It’s very dark and it spends the first hour of the movie making Supergirl pretty unlikable. Nothing feels fresh: it’s 1/3 Handcock, 1/3 John Wick and 1/3 The Last Jedi.  My kids were asking when the movie would be over, which is not a good sign.

The last half hour was exciting, so if you stay it gets better, kind of. The motivation of the main character is to save her CGI dog. The motivation of the young girl that comes to her for help is to avenge her fallen parents. And as a sidenote, they save female trafficking victims, which objectively is the most important, yet nearly overlooked activity. Also, they required the help of Aquaman in gritty-glam makeup on a motorcycle for humor and visual interest.

My oldest summed it up at the end. “It figures that they would give a female superhero a kid to watch.” 2 stars.

KFC toys makes the movie seem like it is for kids.
