Joseph’s family moved to the land of Goshen, the Nile Delta. Joseph brought five of his brothers to Pharaoh and presented them. The Pharaoh agreed to them living in the land of Rameses and offered them jobs tending his royal flocks. Joseph also presented his father Israel who was 130 and said his days were “few and evil,” spending many of his years as a sojourner. Israel blessed Pharaoh. Joseph provided sustenance for his whole, extended family. 

Meanwhile, the famine raged. Joseph used the abundance of grain that he collected on behalf of Pharaoh bring in gold and silver from all the people to the royal coffers. As the time wore on, he traded grain for animals, then land, and finally the people themselves. He relocated them to cities, provided them land and seed. Joseph set up a system where the people would farm the land and give Pharaoh one fifth of their harvest and keep four-fifths. The Pharaoh owned everything and everybody except the priests who were given an allowance by the Pharaoh. That’s a lot of power, wealth and control for one dynasty. 

Israel lives another seventeen years, and when he is dying asks for them to bury him in his homeland of Canaan. It will be many centuries before his request is fulfilled.
