Exodus 18: Jethro

Remember Moses’s father-in-law Jethro, high priest of Midian? Well, some time during the saga with Pharaoh, Moses sent his wife Zipporah and his two sons to stay with Grandpa Jethro out in the wilderness. Now that the Israelites are out and about, Jethro brings them back to Moses who is now at the base of Mount Horeb, called the Mountain of the Lord. Jethro rejoices that they are finally free and gives an offering to the Lord. He eats a meal with Aaron and the elders.

Jethro observes Moses spending all of his days judging, that is fielding disputes between people. He warns Moses that he will wear himself out if he doesn’t get help. Jethro suggests that Moses find responsible and trustworthy men to assist him. Moses takes his wife’s dad’s advice and makes some in charge of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens of people. That way everyone can get the help they need right away.

After that, Jethro goes back home to his own country in Arabia.

Here we see Moses receiving both help and advice from his father-in-law. Moses is humble enough to appreciate someone else’s leadership experience and delegate authority to have a healthy, well-run community.
