Exodus 23:20-33 Promised Land

God tells Moses that he will send an angel ahead of him to bring him to a place “I have prepared.” This is similar language to God’s prompting of Abraham, but the angel is a new development.

Moses is told to obey God and he will make Moses’ enemies his enemies and his adversaries, God’s adversaries.

“When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out.” Exodus 23:23

By preparation, he means eviction and destruction. God says he will not destroy them all in one year, “lest the land become desolate and the wild beasts multiply against you,” (v. 29) but little by little, as the people of Israel grow into the space. It’s going to be a multigenerational project, so don’t worry about not seeing it completed on day one.

Additionally, if they serve him, God promises to bless the Israelites so they will not have miscarriages or diseases and live full lives. God is also clear that this is about him and his worship. The Israelites are to worship and obey God exclusively and not be swayed into another way.

The boundaries God sets here are between the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, the Euphrates and the desert. Again, this is not about world conquest, but God setting apart a people for his own purposes using his power to secure it in his own time.
